Use of Traps for control of fruit flies in tomato cultivation

Pest biology

The tomato fruit fly, Neoceratitis cyanescens (previously known as Trirhithromyia cyanescens and Pardalaspis cyanescens) attacks tomato fruits. A female (photo 1) lays about 80 eggs during her life time. The eggs are inserted in small clusters a few millimetres below the surface of the fruit. The eggs hatched into larvae which grow and feed on the pulp inside the fruit. The fully grown larvae then pupate in the soil. As the larvae are located inside the fruit and the pupae in the soil, their control becomes difficult.

Disease Alert – Anthracnose disease on Litchi

Prevailing climatic conditions (high temperature and high relative humidity) are highly conducive for the development and spread of Anthracnose on litchi fruits caused by Colletotrichum sp.

Symptoms comprise brown to dark areas on fruits (immature and mature fruits).  Infected fruits may eventually rot.

Management strategies include:

  • Sanitation: Where possible collect infected fruits, seal in bags and leave exposed to the sun.
  • Treat fruits with Topsin M @ 1 mL/L of water at 7-day intervals.  Two applications are recommended.
PHI for Topsin M: 14 days.

Avian Influenza

Introduction

The H5N1 virus of Avian influenza is a serious threat both to the poultry species and to human beings. Incubation period for this disease is 3 to 7 days.  This disease is infectious and all birds are thought to be susceptible to the infection, though some species are more resistant than others.  Infection causes a wide spectrum of symptoms in birds ranging from illness to a highly contagious and rapidly fatal disease resulting in severe epidemics characterised by sudden on set, severe illness and death, with a mortality that can approach 100%. The quarantining of infected farms and destruction of infected or potentially exposed flocks are standard control measures aimed at preventing spread to other farms and eventual establishment of the virus country’s poultry population.

  FODDER SUPPLY CHART

FODDER SUPPLY CHART

Ruminant livestock in Mauritius are reared essentially on a cut carry system. Naturally growing fodder and agricultural by-products constitute the basis of their feed resources Natural fodder comprises a number of species and their availability varies with location due to elevation, rainfall and soil type. For example, natural grasses are available on state forestlands, natural reserves, riverbanks and roadsides all the year round, however there is poor growth during the winter months. Fortunately the winter months coincide with the sugar-cane harvest season. Therefore farmers make maximum use of canetops, a by-product of the sugar industry. By the way sugar cane tops are by far the largest single forage source used by the smallholder farmers from June to December. Table 1 presents a list of the different types of fodder and their availability.

Blended fertilizers

New Recommendations for Sugar Cane

New recommendations for fertilizer application in sugar cane fields have been released by the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute in April 2005. The new formulations of blended NPK fertilizers are more concentrated and contain more NPK than the “traditional” NPK complex/blended fertilizers 17-8-25 and 17-2-27 formulations.
